Residential burglaries reported
Newman police are investigating three recent burglary reports.
An X-Box and a handgun were reported stolen Aug. 9 from a residence in the 1200 block of Kern Street. The items, valued at $350, were taken while the family was out for a brief walk.
Numerous items were reported stolen Aug. 10 from a garage of a vacant home in the 1200 block of Yolo. The items included two bicycles, a generator, tools, a lawn edger, a lawn mower and a paint sprayer. The value of the items was estimated to be in excess of $1,300.
A family returning home Aug. 11 from a week-long vacation discovered that a television, shotgun and possibly jewelry items had been taken from their ransacked residence.
Weekly activity report
Newman police answered 196 calls for service, handled 29 cases, made eight arrests, issued 15 traffic citations and towed two vehicles in the week ending Aug. 15.
Gustine Police
DUI checkpoint planned
The Gustine Police Department will be conducting a DUI checkpoint Saturday, Aug. 28, at a location on Highway 33.
The time of the checkpoint was not announced.
Gustine will be assisted by officers from other Merced County law enforcement agencies, including the Merced Police Department and Los Banos Police Department.
The operation is funded by a grant from the Office of Traffic Safety, which is administered by the Merced Police Department.
Burglary
Police said a Gustine Unified School District maintenance facility located on the old middle school grounds was reportedly burglarized over the weekend.
Several rolls of wire and various tools were taken.
The items were valued in excess of $1,000.
Weekly activity report
Gustine police received 93 calls for service, handled nine cases, made one arrest, conducted 25 traffic stops and issued two citations in the week ending Aug. 17.
