“Cut for the Cure” fund-raiser

Team Makoa, a Newman team participating in the Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure, a walk to raise funds for breast cancer research and awareness, will host a fund-raiser Sunday, Aug. 22, from 9 a.m. to noon at Hair Krazy in Newman.

Haircuts for men and boys are offered for $5; haircuts for girls and women are $10. All proceeds go to the fund-raising efforts of Team Makoa.

Centennial cookbooks

Orestimba High School centennial cookbooks are available for a limited time at Novoa Jewelers and Unique by Design in Newman, Mary Jane’s Salon of Beauty in Crows Landing and Pat’s House of Beauty in Gustine.

The cookbooks, which are priced at $20, will also be sold at Orestimba home football games.

Service appreciation coffee

The Veterans Administration Palo Alto health care system is inviting all active duty military, veterans, families and significant others to a service appreciation coffee Saturday, Aug. 28, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Newman City Council chambers, 1200 Main St.

Veterans Administration staff will be on hand to answer questions regarding veteran benefits.

Those attending are asked to bring their DD214 form.

Animal rescue

East of Eden Rescue is in need of foster homes for rescued cats and dogs. The Newman-based animal rescue is also seeking volunteers to help at adoption and community information events.

East of Eden is offering a special promotional kitten adoption fee of $45 for a pair. The fee includes spay or neuter, all vaccinations and medications and micro-chipping.

Parenting support program

The Women’s Ministry at First Baptist Church of Newman is hosting “Raising Responsive Children,” a Bible study for moms, beginning Thursday, Sept. 2.

The study will meet in the church sancutary Thursdays from 6:30-7:30 p.m. through March 17.

Newman Family Resource food pantry

The Newman Family Resource Center is operating a food pantry service to help provide for West Side families faced with emergency need.

The resource center, located on the grounds of Von Renner Elementary School, is open weekdays from 8-5 (closed for lunch).

Those seeking food services are asked to provide identification to verify residency. The center will also verify incomes of food recipients.

Awana Club to start

First Baptist Church of Newman will host an Awana Club kickoff program Sunday, Aug. 29, at 6 p.m. Families are invited to attend.

Regular meetings of the youth club will begin Sept. 12 at 5:30 p.m.

West Side Theatre

Antsy McClain and the Trailer Park Troubadours return to the West Side Theatre stage Friday, Aug. 20.

McClain, a song-writer, story-teller and entertainer, sings about life in an American trailer park; the Troubadours are a skilled assortment of musicians who play in the folksy, rock-and-roll tradition of their blue-collar forefathers. Together, they present a fast-paced show with insightful humor.

Tickets are $28 for reserved seats and $24 for general admission.

Snap Jackson

Snap Jackson and the Knock on Wood Players take the West Side Theatre stage Saturday, Aug. 21.

The acoustic trio incorporates Americana, bluegrass, soul and old-time music into its fresh and unique sound.

Tickets are $15 for reserved seats and $12 for general admission.

Michael Gaither & Friends/Rick Di Dia & Aireene Espiritu

An evening of California-based acoustic folk, blues and American roots music is in store Saturday, Aug. 28, when the West Side Theatre hosts Michael Gaither & Friends and Rick Di Dia & Aireene Espiritu in concert.

Tickets for the musical doubleheader are $15 for reserved seats and $12 for general admission.

House of Floyd

House of Floyd brings its tribute to Pink Floyd back to the local stage for an encore performance Saturday, Sept. 11.

Tickets are $22 for reserved seats and $19 for general admission.

Ruby Dee & The Snakehandlers

Ruby Dee & The Snakehandlers visit the West SIde Saturday, Sept. 18, to deliver their trademark blend of Texas honky-tonk, western swing and rockabilly sounds which have delighted crowds in clubs, festivals and county fairs.

Tickets are $15 for reserved seats and $12 for general admission.

Each show begins at 8 p.m.

Volunteers drive for cancer patients

The American Cancer Society has a group of dedicated volunteers on the West Side who provide transportation to cancer patients needing assistance getting to treatment appointments or medical visits.
