Vallejo child dies in I-5 accident
A Vallejo boy was killed in an early Friday morning accident on Interstate 5 north of Whitworth Road, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Authorities identified the victim as 6-year-old Aidan Santos.

The child was one of eight people riding in a van which went out of control and overturned.

The driver, 28-year-old Aris Santos of Vallejo, told the CHP that he had looked up to see a U-Haul trailer directly ahead of him in the southbound lane, braked hard and swerved to avoid the collision, losing control of the vehicle.

Two of the four children sitting in the back seat of the 1999 Toyota Sienna van were ejected from the vehicle. Aidan Santos was pronounced dead at the scene. One other child was flown to Memorial Medical Center, Modesto, with major injuries. The vehicle’s remaining six occupants were taken by ground ambulance to Memorial Hospital in Los Banos with minor and moderate injuries.

The CHP report indicates that improper seat belt use was a factor. Four children were occupying the rear seat of the vehicle, which had only three seat belts.

The accident occurred shortly after 4 a.m.
