NEWMAN – The St. George Hotel, one of downtown Newman’s most striking and historic buildings, reopened under new management in early January.

Owners DeeDee and Ron Sequeira opened the business as a saloon and have since added a basic grill menu in response to customer demand.

The Sequeiras are leasing but eventually hope to eventually purchase the building, and plan to restore the century-old structure which still features the stained glass windows brought over from Portugal, the bar which came from France and other original amenities.

“It is an awesome place,” reflected DeeDee Sequeira. “ We want to bring it back as much as we can.”

St. George patrons have been enjoying the atmosphere as well, the Sequeiras said.

DeeDee Sequeira worked at the St. George for past owners over the years; Ron Sequeira retired last year after a long career in the RV business.

When the opportunity arose to take over the St. George, they found themselves in business.

“I have always wanted to own a bar,” DeeDee Sequeira said. “This kind of fell into our laps.”

The business opened as a bar, and opened the kitchen sooner than projected. Lunch is served from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.; dinner from 4-9.

The bill of fare is basic at this point, Ron Sequeira said, adding that “we keep experimenting, and will add to the menu.”

Live entertainment is offered on weekends.

Designated drivers ensure that patrons get safely home.

“We want everybody to have a good time, but also be safe,” Ron Sequeira stressed.

The business can accommodate parties and special events.

The St. George last operated as a hotel 20 years ago.

The Sequeiras are exploring the options for renovating the 14 upstairs guest rooms, perhaps each with its own theme.

According to the Sequeiras, the St. George Hotel opened in 1907 to great fanfare – including a performance by the Barnum and Bailey Circus to commemorate the grand event.

The hotel has more than 100 years of rich history which the Sequeiras plan to celebrate and preserve.

And like any historic hotel worth its salt, say the Sequeiras, the St. George also has its resident ghosts inhabiting the premises, adding to the ambiance of the stately old building overlooking Main Street.
