GUSTINE – A single-vehicle accident claimed the life of a Gustine man Thursday evening.

California Highway Patrol officer Lance Velez identified the victim as 21-year-old Cody J. Anthenien.

According to CHP reports, Anthenien was driving a 1999 Ford F-250 pickup westbound at a high rate of speed on Gun Club Road near Azevedo Road when the vehicle apparently drifted off the roadway and then spun out of control and overturned several times.

Anthenien was ejected from the vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene, Velez said. According to investigators, he was not wearing a seat belt.

A passenger in the truck, 35-year-old Richard Wright of Gustine, suffered major injuries and was flown to Memorial Medical Center.

Velez said there was no indication that alcohol or drugs were involved.

The accident happened at about 6:45 p.m.
