NEWMAN – Voters in the Newman-Crows Landing Unified School District will face a crowded ballot when they fill two school board seats in November.

Four more candidates jumped into the race before the filing period closed Friday, bringing the field to seven.

Incumbent Derek Solano and challengers Kerry McWilliams, Olivia Gonzalez and Richard Gaytan filed for election last week. They joined incumbent Barbara Alexander and candidates Paul Wallace and Michelle McCullough in the race.

Gaytan is a retiree who currently serves on the Newman Parks and Recreation Commission.

“Because of everything that has been happening, I think it is time for a change,” he commented. “I think I can use my experience on other boards to help the school board and the staff.”

One priority, Gaytan said, would be to provide training for board members and staff to better address the concerns of parents.

McWilliams is a former Orestimba High School teacher, coach and administrator who is currently assistant principal at Creekside Middle School in Patterson.

He said he would welcome the opportunity to bring his educational background and experience to the board level.

“As a board member, you can help set the vision and direction of the district,” he noted.

Academic achievement at all schools would be a top priority, McWilliams stated. He also believes the district must continue to offer programs which meet student needs despite its budget constraints.

Gonzalez, who listed her occupation as a caregiver, said she wants to see all students thrive academically and receive an education which prepares them for life after their school years.

“I always have an interest to serve the community,” she reflected. “I want to contribute however I can.”
