Gustine’s road through the Western Athletic Conference volleyball season continued last week with matches against Highway 33 rivals Orestimba and Patterson.

Visiting Orestimba downed Gustine 25-13, 25-19, 25-15 Wednesday evening in a “Dig Pink” match which promoted breast cancer awareness and raised funds for the fight against the disease.

Bridgette Brady led Gustine with six kills. Thalia Fabian came up with 10 assists, Brenda Ramirez had four digs and Micayla Laupua finished with four aces on the night.

Patterson 3, GHS 0

The Tigers turned back Gustine 25-18, 25-14, 25-14 Thursday evening, in a match postponed from earlier in the week.

The Lady Redskins continued to show positive strides but were unable to come away with a victory to show for their efforts.

Brady put down five kills and had a block for good measure.

Shannon Goularte came up with seven digs, Laupua collected nine aces and Fabian was credited with four assists.

“I thought Bridgette Brady played well this week, and Shannon Goularte did a good job for us again,” Coach Bryan Hall commented. “The other player I have been pleased with is Brenda Ramirez. She has given our team another facet which has been helpful.”

Frosh-soph victorious

Gustine’s frosh-soph team broke into the conference win column with a 22-25, 25-11, 15-5 decision Thursday.

“We’ve played them close in the previous matches, and we really clicked this time,” Hall said. “We were on our game.”

Selenee Flores turned in a solid all-around effort with eight kills, five aces and four digs. Alex Flores contributed 10 assists, Megan Azevedo had seven aces and Jaylianna Caldera came up with five digs.

The previous night, Gustine dropped a 2-0 decision to Orestimba.

Gustine wrapped up its 2009 volleyball campaign Monday evening against Livingston.
