Lady Warrior Sarah Spaulding hits against Colfax in playoff action Tuesday.
Visiting Colfax pushed Orestimba to the brink Tuesday, but the Lady Warriors battled back to win a five-game playoff thriller.
With the match on the line, the Lady Warriors refused to lose – surviving a Colfax match point in the fourth game and going on to a 25-22, 18-25, 12-25, 26-24, 15-13 victory.
Orestimba set a school record with its 26th win of the season, and with the memorable victory advances to face third-seeded Ripon tonight (Thursday).
“We could have totally folded (after the third game) but we didn’t,” said Coach John Labno. “That’s what this team has done all season. They just don’t give up.”
Colfax had the better of the play for much of the night.
Orestimba held off a Colfax rally to win the opener, but the Falcons
won the next two. That set the stage for two close, intense games which
featured numerous lead changes.
Colfax was a point away from closing out the match with a 24-23 lead
in Game 4, but a Brooke Corgiat kill kept Orestimba’s hopes alive. The
Lady Warriors scored the next two points to win it and force a fifth
and deciding game.
Colfax jumped out to an 8-4 lead, but the Lady Warriors answered
with six straight points. After the Falcons went back up by a point at
12-11, Orestimba tied the game after a long rally and went on to close
out the match.
Maraiya Byous led a balanced Orestimba hitting attack with seven
kills. Courtney Stettler had six, while Sarah Spaulding, Brooke Corgiat
and Tiffany Nooe each collected four. Spaulding had three blocks.
Corgiat was credited with two.
Nooe, who made several big plays from the back row, came up with 31
digs on the night. Byous had 17, Carlee Felber had 14, Spaulding and
Stettler had a dozen digs each and Chelsea Kimball came up with seven –
including several crucial plays in the final game.
Spaulding, Corgiat and Felber each had two aces, and Felber was credited with 23 assists.
Orestimba travels to play at Ripon in second-round playoff action tonight (Thursday). The match begins at 7 p.m.
