A long season came to a close last Monday for Gustine High’s Lady Redskins, who were dealt a 25-10, 25-21, 25-9 setback by Livingston.
Gustine made positive strides in the second half of the campaign, but was unable to break into the win column in their final season in the Western Athletic Conference.
The Lady Redskins were without regular setter Thalia Fabian in the
finale. Alex Flores came up from the frosh-soph ranks to fill that role.
Shannon Goularte had 15 digs to lead Gustine defensively. Micayla Laupua came up with six digs.
Bridgette Brady and Laken Leonard each had two kills.
Brady also had three blocks and three aces.
Livingston won the frosh-soph match two games to none.
Coach Bryan Hall said that he was encouraged by the improvement he saw as the season progressed.
“Both our junior varsity and varsity teams played better than their
records indicate, and we met some of our initial goals for the season,”
he commented. “Our varsity team will only lose four players to
graduation, and the returning players should form a competitive core
next fall.”
The Lady Redskins have struggled during their four years in the
Western Athletic Conference. Gustine will join the Southern League next
season.
