NEWMAN - Local police, school officials and emergency responders will conduct a school crisis training exercise Saturday, Jan. 30, at Orestimba High.

The training will take place from 8 a.m. to about 2 p.m., Police Chief Adam McGill said.

The exercise will involve law enforcement and school staff response to simulated school shootings.

The scenarios are designed to improve emergency readiness in the event of a school crisis.

A number of students will be involved in the training, including some made up to portray wounded shooting victims.

McGill said the exercise is a joint training involving the Stanislaus County Office of Education, Newman-Crows Landing Unified School District, Newman Police Department, Newman Volunteer Fire Department and Westside Ambulance.

Organizers are making the community aware of the upcoming event through newspaper coverage, informational fliers to the immediate neighborhood and telephone messages so that residents who may witness the activity are aware that it is a training exercise.
