NEWMAN – Two Newman residents were arrested on felony charges Friday after a brief vehicle pursuit, a foot chase and a fight with an officer, according to police reports.

Authorities identified those arrested as Terra Culebro, 35, and Anthony Azevedo, 27, both of Newman.

According to authorities, Culebro was the driver of a vehicle which an officer attempted to pull over for a vehicle code violation early Friday afternoon. Instead of yielding to the officer, police said, the driver continued on for about a half-mile at speeds of 30 mph or less before pulling into a driveway in the 1200 block of Amy Drive.

At that point a passenger who was hiding in the rear seat of the vehicle, identified as Azevedo, fled on foot.

The officer chased Azevedo through the garage of the home, into the back yard and then into the house. Police reports state that at several points during the chase the officer caught up to Azevedo, but he resisted and broke away. Authorities said Azevedo tried running out the front door of the residence when the officer was able to catch up to him once again, at which time Azevedo began fighting with the officer and attempted to flee again.

Azevedo was eventually taken into custody without further resistance when the officer deployed his Taser.

Police said Azevedo was booked on felony charges of resisting arrest, a felony enhancement for committing a crime while out on bail and misdemeanor charges of battery on a police officer. He was also booked on outstanding felony warrants for possession of a controlled substance, burglary, impersonating another person, unauthorized use of personal identification and using a forged access card.

As of Monday, police said, Azevedo remained in Stanislaus County Jail. His bail was set at $257,500, according to authorities.

Police said Culebro was booked on felony charges of being an accessory to a felony, evading a police officer and rearrest/revoke felony probation. She was also charged with obstructing a police officer, a misdmeanor.
