7th Annual Westside 5K Color Run/Walk: A colorful tradition in Gustine

The Westside 5K Color Run/Walk, now in its seventh year, has become a beloved tradition in Gustine. This community-driven event, which began in 2016 through a partnership between the City of Gustine and Gustine High School, was established to promote a healthy lifestyle and bring residents together in a fun, inclusive way. At its inception, the event also served as a fundraiser for both the school and the city's recreation department, and over the years, it has grown into a cornerstone of the community’s celebrations.

The event is set for 8:30 a.m. Nov. 9.

This year’s event brings exciting changes aimed at enhancing the participant experience. With the 5K Color Run/Walk moving to Harry Schmidt Park, participants can now enjoy a scenic route on the park's walking path. The move also minimizes the inconvenience of road closures, especially with ongoing construction on North Avenue and the new roundabout, allowing for smoother participation.

Participants are encouraged to come dressed in colorful outfits—whether Halloween costumes or crazy attire—adding to the light-hearted and energetic atmosphere. Kicking off the event will be a high-energy Zumba session, offering a fun way for everyone to warm up before the race begins. Vendor booths will be set up around the park, providing food, crafts, and merchandise, further creating a festive and engaging environment for participants and spectators alike.

This event plays a vital role in supporting the Gustine High School Class of 2025, with funds raised helping to cover the costs of their senior trip. In a small town like Gustine, opportunities for big celebrations are limited, making this fundraiser particularly meaningful for students. It provides them with the means to enjoy a memorable trip that marks the end of their high school journey, a milestone they’ll cherish for years to come.

Over the years, the Westside 5K Color Run/Walk has become known for its joyful and spontaneous moments. Event organizers recall many heartwarming instances, from young children experiencing the fun of the color run for the first time to the laughter shared between participants covered in vibrant hues. One organizer fondly remembers the time a bucket of green color was dumped on the mayor and a group of seniors, followed by a playful “attack” of color by the lifeguard staff. These moments of shared laughter and community spirit are what make the event truly special.

The ultimate goal of the Westside 5K Color Run/Walk is to leave participants with a sense of pride in supporting their community and a lasting memory of a fun and vibrant day. Whether participating in the race, enjoying food from vendors, or simply watching from the sidelines, the event offers something for everyone. It also serves as an invitation to residents to continue using Harry Schmidt Park’s walking path as a way to stay active and connected.

Fun awards will be given out, including 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place for runners, as well as special awards for "Most Colorful," "Best Dressed," and "Craziest Outfit."

Local businesses and individuals also have the opportunity to sponsor the event or become vendors. Vendor fees are $50, with a discounted rate of $25 for local downtown businesses. Sponsorships help cover the costs of the color and race supplies, with sponsors being recognized on banners throughout the event.

The deadline to receive a T-shirt with registration is Oct. 15, ensuring participants have their gear in time for the event. With plenty of opportunities to participate, sponsor, or simply enjoy the day, the Westside 5K Color Run/Walk promises to be a colorful and unforgettable experience for the whole community.
