Bob McConnell, founder of TOSCA scholarship organization, dies at 97

Bob McConnell, whose life and work brought hope, compassion, and dedication to countless individuals, died on January 16. He was 97. McConnell was the founder of the TOSCA scholarship organization and a cherished member of the Newman community, leaving behind a legacy that will be remembered for generations.

Newman Crows Landing Unified School District Superintendent Justin Pruett reflected on McConnell’s significant contributions, saying, “Through his tireless efforts, countless students were able to pursue their dreams and achieve goals that might have seemed out of reach. Bob’s legacy is one of hope, generosity, and an unwavering belief in the potential of our young people.” McConnell dedicated his life to empowering students, ensuring that they could envision a future filled with possibility.

Michael Holland, TOSCA Board President and Newman City Manager, highlighted McConnell’s transformative impact, noting, “As a founding member of TOSCA, Bob was instrumental in helping to build it into an organization that annually distributes over a quarter million dollars in scholarship money to Orestimba High School graduates. Anyone who had the opportunity to share time with Bob knew how much he loved our community and how proud he was of the TOSCA organization.” Holland added that McConnell’s “wonderful smile and unconditional friendship will be greatly missed by all.”

The Newman City Council also expressed their admiration for McConnell, describing him as “a truly valued member of our community who proudly shared his love for Newman. Bob will be deeply missed by all who knew him. Our thoughts and prayers are with Bob’s family during this difficult time.” McConnell’s love for Newman was evident in his many contributions to the community.

McConnell’s work with TOSCA led to the distribution that annually distributes over a quarter million dollars in scholarships to Orestimba High School graduates, providing opportunities for higher education to those who might have otherwise been unable to afford it. His dedication extended to the development of the GUSTO and PRIDE programs, which encouraged students to reach their full potential.

In addition to his work with TOSCA, McConnell was an active member of the Newman Rotary Club, serving as president and contributing to numerous committees. His passion for the Rotary’s speech contest was particularly notable, as he worked with many students over the years to help them develop their public speaking skills and build confidence.

McConnell was known for his warmth, kindness, and infectious smile. He had a unique ability to connect with people and make them feel valued. Superintendent Pruett noted, “Let us honor his commitment to education and reflect on the profound difference one person can make in the lives of so many.” McConnell’s story serves as a testament to the impact that one individual can have on a community.
