Get ready to reel: Gustine’s Kids' Fishing Day returns to Harry Schmidt Park

You must have a fishing license to enjoy fishing, regardless of whether you intend to keep any fish you catch.

Dust off those fishing rods and get ready to cast your lines. Gustine’s beloved Kids' Fishing Day is back, bringing local families together for a day of outdoor adventure at Harry Schmidt Park’s duck pond. With a rich history rooted in community spirit, this event continues to inspire young anglers and create lasting memories, all while encouraging kids to step away from their screens and discover the joys of fishing.
While the original inspiration behind Kids' Fishing Day might be a mystery lost to time, its purpose is as clear as the sparkling waters of the newly refreshed duck pond.

“The event gives kids in the community a chance to learn outdoor skills and potentially develop a lifelong passion for fishing,” says Gustine Recreation Coordinator Tiffany Vitorino.

Over the years, the format has shifted to better accommodate families, especially in light of changes brought about during the pandemic. Now, rather than pausing for a lunch and raffle under Peterson Shelter, the fishing fun continues uninterrupted, with lunch provided on the go and raffle winners announced prior to the event. This change has been a hit with families, who are encouraged to stay long after the event to continue fishing together.

“We’ve found that families often linger, making it a full-day adventure,” Vitorino adds. “That’s really what this event is all about—getting people outside, enjoying nature, and spending time together.”

This year, thanks to the hard work of Gustine’s Public Works Department and City Manager, the pond will be in better shape than ever. A brand-new aeration system and two fountains have been installed, ensuring healthier oxygen levels for the fish—and a better experience for all participants. “We’re expecting more active fish this year, which should make for some really exciting catches,” Vitorino says.

Preparing the park for the event is no small task, but the Public Works team takes pride in ensuring the grounds are clean and the pond is pristine. With the improvements in place, the kids are in for a treat as they cast their lines into what promises to be a livelier pond.

Fishing isn’t the only thrill of the day. Kids will also have a shot at winning some great prizes, with one special fish tagged for a $100 Amazon gift card. And thanks to generous contributions from local businesses, a raffle offers the chance to win camping and fishing gear perfect for future outdoor adventures. Donations are still being accepted, and it’s never too late to sponsor—whether online, in-person at City Hall, or by mailing a check to the City of Gustine.

As with any outdoor event, safety is a top priority. The park is carefully inspected, with volunteers, including lifeguard staff, stationed throughout the area to ensure a safe and smooth experience. Parents are encouraged to come prepared, with essential items like fishing poles, bait, chairs, and mosquito spray, as well as a few optional supplies like sunscreen and baby wipes. A helpful checklist is provided upon registration, making it easy for families to know what to bring.

None of this would be possible without the tremendous support from local businesses, service clubs, and individual community members. From donating raffle items to sponsoring lunch, the community comes together in countless ways to make this event a success year after year. This year, even lap swim participants have chipped in by donating lunch items.

Perhaps the most special part of Kids' Fishing Day is seeing the joy it brings to children. “One of my favorite moments is when a child catches their very first fish and can’t contain their excitement,” Vitorino shares. “It’s an experience many kids might not otherwise have the chance to enjoy, and it’s heartwarming to see parents, grandparents, and friends all taking part.”
