The Newman Police Department has added two zero emission electric motorcycles added to the patrol fleet with funding coming from the San Joaquin Valley Air Pollution Control District.
The funding came through a grant the District offers as part of the Drive Clean Rebate Program. The program’s grant offers rebates for zero-emission motorcycles for departments on a first come, first save basis. The maximum rebate is $3,000, depending on the vehicle purchased and the vehicles must have been purchased or leased within 18 months of the grant award.
Historically, some of the challenges facing zero-emission motorcycles adoption have included vehicle cost, limited range, and charging time/availability. With advancements in battery technology and an increase in number of electric vehicle charging stations, these motorcycles are overcoming these challenges and becoming a more attractive option for motorcyclists.
The Newman Police Department plans on using their two motorcycles for traffic enforcement and patrolling the wetlands and nature park upon their completion. Cpl. Parrott and Officer Bayer have been selected as the part-time motor officers.
