The Gustine Historical Society’s mural project at the Al Goman Center is progressing smoothly, with significant portions already completed. This project, which seeks to vividly capture and celebrate the town's history from its early days up to 1915, is already starting to take shape, much to the excitement of the community. One of the mural’s boxes is fully completed, filled with a vibrant historical scene that offers a glimpse of the final masterpiece.

Alexandra Riddle is the artist behind the mural and she has been diligently working to bring Gustine’s rich history to life, one brushstroke at a time. The project involves creating eight distinct picture boxes, each depicting a unique aspect of the town’s past. So far, Riddle has made remarkable progress, with one of the boxes already completed and providing a preview of the detailed and colorful scenes to come.

Recognizing the growing interest and curiosity among residents, Gustine Historical Society President Mary Ann Bloom shared an update about the project at the recent Gustine Chamber of Commerce Mixer in Santa Nella. “We’re thrilled with how the mural is coming along and are eager for the community to see the progress,” Bloom said during the mixer.

In light of the excitement surrounding the project, Bloom is extending a warm invitation to the entire community. “We encourage everyone to come out, bring a chair, and enjoy watching the mural come to life,” she said. “This is a unique opportunity to witness our town’s history being painted in such a significant and beautiful way. We hope many of you will come and see the artist at work, and reflect on the stories and people that have made Gustine what it is today.”

Residents are invited to visit the Al Goman Center throughout the coming weeks to observe the ongoing work. The artist is committed to ensuring that each scene in the mural accurately represents the historical elements chosen by the Historical Society, with careful attention to detail that honors Gustine's heritage.

The mural project is not just an artistic endeavor, but a community-driven effort aimed at preserving and celebrating Gustine’s rich heritage. Funded primarily through the generous donation from the Matthews Estate, with additional support welcomed from community members, this project reflects the collective pride and memory of the town.

As the mural continues to take shape, excitement builds for its final reveal. The Gustine Historical Society plans to host an official unveiling once the mural is completed, inviting the entire community to come together and celebrate this significant addition to the Al Goman Center.

In the meantime, residents are encouraged to visit the site, enjoy the beautiful weather, and participate in this communal experience. “It’s a great way to spend a morning or afternoon, watching the past come alive on the walls of one of our most cherished community spaces,” Bloom added.

The Gustine Historical Society Mural Project is on track to become a landmark that not only beautifies the Al Goman Center but also serves as a lasting tribute to the town’s history. Whether you’ve lived in Gustine your whole life or are new to the area, this mural offers a unique opportunity to connect with the stories and people that have made Gustine the town it is today. So, grab a chair, head to the Al Goman Center, and be a part of this historical moment as it unfolds.
