GUSTINE, Calif. — The Gustine Police Department celebrated its annual departmental awards ceremony on March 20 with a gathering that showcased the dedication and hard work of its officers, civilians, and volunteers.
Held in the presence of Mayor Pat Nagy and Merced County District Attorney Nicole Silveira, the ceremony honored individuals who have gone above and beyond in serving their community.
Police Chief Ruben Chavez praised the exceptional efforts of the department’s personnel, saying, “While we are a smaller police agency, we are staffed with the hardest working and most dedicated police officers, civilians, and volunteers. We cannot accomplish what we do without them. I love this department and community and truly enjoy the support our agency gets from the City and Council.”
This year’s Officer of the Year award was presented to Officer Michael Trujillo, who has been with the Gustine Police Department for four years. Chief Chavez highlighted Officer Trujillo’s accomplishments, noting his role as a Field Training Officer and certified Radar/Lidar operator. “He is very committed to the community, and I have received numerous accolades on his interactions with the community members he comes in contact with,” Chavez said.
Volunteer Jimmy Ray Rowton was recognized as Volunteer of the Year for his consistent support and mentorship. “Jimmy lives near the Police Department and is always available to help us when needed. I have asked him several times to help drive our vehicles for servicing to Fresno and Los Banos, and he has always said yes, no problem. He is also a great mentor to our Police Explorers and accompanies them to the Pebble Beach Details we work,” Chavez said.
Officer Anthony Alvarez received both the Top Shot award and the MADD DUI Award for his outstanding commitment to safety. Alvarez led the department in a shooting competition and made 29 DUI arrests last year, contributing to safer roadways in Gustine. Reflecting on the tragic loss of volunteer Abraham Guzman, who was killed by a DUI driver, Chavez remarked, “He [Alvarez] is truly dedicated to making our roadways safer.”
Mayor Nagy personally presented the awards, commending the recipients for their invaluable contributions to Gustine. The ceremony reinforced the department’s commitment to excellence and its focus on community service.
