The Gustine Police Department is kicking off its annual toy drive, continuing a heartfelt tradition that began last year. The initiative was inspired by a desire to bring joy to families in need during the holiday season, a time that should be about celebration, not stress or worry.
“Last year, we were informed of a local family in need, and we recognized that more families could use some support around the holidays,” shared Officer Edward Gonzales. “Because our officers see that Christmas should be a time of celebration, they were excited to find a way to partner with our community.”
The 2023 toy drive was a resounding success, with officers delivering gifts to approximately 90 children. The impact on the community was profound, with many unforgettable moments shared between the officers, children, and their families.
“There are no words to express the joy we experienced from the children when they received gifts from Santa,” said Gonzales.
This year, the department aims to continue making Christmas special for as many families as possible, focusing on Gustine residents. “Although we are limiting the families to those who reside in the city, we are doing what we can to provide additional ways for these families to get support,” Gonzales explained.
The department identifies families in need through officer observations, calls for service, and an online application process. Families can access the application via the department’s Instagram page or visit the station during business hours for assistance.
Community members can support the toy drive by donating toys or other items for children. While all contributions are appreciated, the department particularly needs sports equipment like basketballs and footballs, gifts for older children such as makeup kits and hair products, and arts and crafts supplies.
For the officers, this initiative is more than just a seasonal project—it’s a testament to their commitment to the community. “It’s a great feeling to be part of something special,” said Sergeant Greg Gillstrap. “We can make families’ Christmas time special and help people out.”
The department’s message to the community is clear: everyone can make a difference. “By deciding to be a part of this, you are helping local children, your neighbors, single parents, servers at local restaurants, school teachers, and so many others,” Gonzales emphasized. “You never know the impact of your actions or how much you can change the trajectory of someone’s life by trying to make a positive impact.”
The Gustine Police Department toy drive is an opportunity for the community to come together and ensure that every child experiences the magic of the holidays. Donations can be dropped off at the police station during business hours. For more information, visit the Gustine Police Department’s Instagram page or contact them directly.
Together, the Gustine Police Department and the community can make this Christmas a season of joy and generosity for those who need it most.
