Gustine’s Trunk or Treat approaching 10 years

Excitement is brewing in Gustine as the highly anticipated Trunk or Treat event returns, this time with a magical Disney-themed twist. Organized by Gustine Recreation Department Director Tiffany Vitorino, this year’s celebration aims to bring the joy of Disney to life, captivating children and adults alike.

Vitorino and her team chose Disney for this year’s theme after receiving feedback from participants. “Disney resonates with everyone,” she explained. “Whether you’re young or old, we all have a favorite movie or character that brings a smile.” With Disney characters already a popular choice for Halloween costumes, it was a natural fit for the event. The wide availability of Disney-themed decorations also makes it easier for participants to get creative.

What started 10 years ago as a small gathering with just a few decorated trunks at the local police station has grown into a large-scale community event with over 40 participants. Neighboring towns like Newman and Santa Nella now take part in the celebration, helping the event flourish. In recent years, new features like a scavenger hunt have been introduced to keep the fun going. Children can collect stamps from different trunks and compete for prizes, including a $100 Amazon gift card.

For the 10th anniversary, exciting new attractions are being added, including carnival games, bounce houses, and Disney movie screenings by DJ Dan Entertainment. A 360-photo booth at City Hall will also give families a unique way to capture their memories from the event.

Participants in the Trunk or Treat event are known for their impressive decorations, with some going all out to create immersive displays. The Gustine Rotary Club, in particular, is recognized for its standout efforts, and rumors suggest they have something unforgettable planned this year. However, Vitorino emphasized that all types of participation are welcome, whether it’s an elaborate setup or simply handing out candy. “The focus is on having fun and giving back to the community,” she said.

For the first time, a trunk decoration contest will allow attendees to vote for their favorite display via Facebook, adding an extra layer of excitement to the event.

The community has responded enthusiastically to the event, with many appreciating the safe and festive environment it provides for families. “By partnering with the police department, we’re able to offer a secure space for kids to enjoy Halloween,” Vitorino explained. The event has helped reduce typical Halloween-night issues, including noise complaints. By hosting Trunk or Treat early in the evening, families still have time to enjoy traditional trick-or-treating if they wish.

Ensuring a safe environment for all attendees is a top priority. Both the police and fire departments will be present, with police volunteers patrolling on Segways throughout the event. The layout has been designed to prevent overcrowding, with trunks spaced out to allow plenty of room for participants to move around safely. City Hall will serve as a central location for assistance, should anyone need help.

Community involvement is key to the success of Trunk or Treat, and there are plenty of ways to help. “Volunteering is one of the most impactful ways to get involved,” Vitorino noted. Whether it’s decorating a trunk, helping with setup, or assisting with activities, volunteers play an essential role in making the event run smoothly. Those who can’t volunteer their time can donate candy, decorations, or make monetary contributions to help cover costs. Local businesses can sponsor trunks, offer prizes, or join the scavenger hunt.

As the 10th anniversary of Trunk or Treat approaches, Gustine is ready for another night of safe, spooktacular fun. Thanks to Vitorino’s leadership, the event promises to be a magical experience for families, full of creativity, excitement, and community spirit.
