Merced County Spring Fair approaching

Any hopes that local 4Hers and FFA students would be able to showcase their cattle and poultry at the upcoming Merced County Spring Fair were dashed last week when the county announced the cancelation of the shows for those particular animals.

“As many of you know, we have been working closely with the CDFA Animal Health Branch to prepare for our annual County Fair,” Merced County stated in a news release. “Despite our best efforts, we regret to inform you that we must cancel the 2025 Merced County Spring Fair Dairy Cattle Show and Dairy Replacement Heifer Sale due to updated restrictions. These restrictions prohibit dairy animals from being present at the fair simultaneously with other species.  Additionally due to the CDFA restrictions the Poultry Show and Sale has also been cancelled.”

California State Veterinarian Dr. Annette Jones implemented a ban in January on all California poultry and dairy cattle exhibitions at fairs and shows because of the continued spread of H5N1 bird flu across the state.

“This action is required to minimize the danger of exposing people and non-infected cows and birds to the disease,” said Dr. Jones in a released statement when the ban was first announced.

There were some hopes that the ban might be lifted as fair dates grew closer, but those hopes did not come to fruition.

“This decision is a precautionary measure, taken to protect animal health and prevent the spread of disease, in line with the CDFA’s updated guidelines,” the county stated. “We understand how disappointing this news is, and we share in your disappointment. However, the health and safety of all participants, animals, and attendees must remain our top priority. We sincerely appreciate your understanding as we adhere to these necessary health protocols.”

For exhibitors who have entered the Dairy Show, the county will be issuing full refunds for the entry fees. Exhibitors do not need to take any further action as the refund will be mailed directly to them.

While the cattle and poultry shows have been cancelled, the horse and rabbit shows will continue. Horse show entries close March 24 and rabbit entries close March 31. Other livestock shows, like swine, sheep and goats will also be at the fair and the entry deadlines have already passed.

The 2025 Spring Fair will be held May 1 to May 4 at the fairgrounds at 403 F Street in Los Banos.

Each year, the Merced County Spring Fair hosts a community-driven festival celebrating local residents' talent and offering all-around family fun. The fair features several grandstand entertainment events and invite residents, groups, and businesses to perform or to sell during the fair

The celebration includes the Merced County Spring Fair Parade, which promises to be a spectacular celebration filled with colorful floats, lively performances, and a joyful atmosphere.

To participate in the parade, simply download the appropriate May Day Parade Entry form from the county’s website or visit the fair office. Be sure to submit your application by April 4 to secure a spot in the parade.
