In an era where screens often dominate children’s attention and the rising cost of entertainment keeps families indoors, one local father is making it his mission to bring kids back to the parks for simple, joyful play.

Michael Campos, a Newman resident and devoted father, has taken it upon himself to create Get Out and Play Day’s, a weekly event aimed at giving children a space to be active, socialize, and embrace their imagination, all at no cost to families.

Campos, who homeschools his two children, saw a growing need for accessible play opportunities in Newman.

“I was inspired to have activities at the park because it was something my children needed, and I realized the rest of the community needed it too,” Campos shared. “With prices being so high for everything nowadays, it’s hard to take kids out all the time to places like trampoline parks or Chuck E. Cheese. I wanted to create something free and accessible where parents wouldn’t have to break the bank to get their kids outside and active.”

The Get Out and Play Days, typically held on Sundays at 3 p.m., have quickly gained popularity. The activities vary each week depending on the number of children and their ages, but Campos is always ready to improvise to ensure every child is engaged. From potato sack races and scavenger hunts to spoon-egg races and dodgeball, there’s never a dull moment. However, there’s one activity that always stands out as a crowd favorite.

“The big rainbow parachute is by far the most loved,” Campos said with a smile. “Hearing the kids giggle and laugh brings joy to my soul.”

At first, some families were hesitant about joining in, unsure of a random dad organizing games at the park. But as word spread, more parents and children began showing up, and Campos’ grassroots movement started to grow. “I believe the most kids we’ve had at one time so far was 26,” he noted. “If the city of Newman were to team up with me, I believe we could make something really special here.”

What makes these play days even more unique is the generosity Campos brings to the experience. Everything from balls, chalk, bikes, scooters, even laser tag, is purchased out of his own pocket. “Not all kids have these things, and not all parents can afford extra play equipment during these hard times,” he explained. “I’ve always taught my kids to share with others, and I try to lead by example. You wouldn’t believe how relieved parents are when I tell them it’s okay for their child to play with something that isn’t theirs.”

For Campos, one particular evening stands out as the defining moment of Get Out and Play Days.

“It was during what my kids call “golden hour”, when the sun was setting, and the weather was perfect,” he recalled. “The park was full of kids playing and laughing, parents were talking, babies were drawing with chalk and playing with bubbles. It hit me that my little idea brought all these people together. I realized in that moment this could be something special.”

Campos hopes to continue growing the initiative and welcomes all families to join in. “It’s basically one giant play date,” he said. “Right now, I’m testing out what works and what doesn’t, but my goal is to keep this going and, hopefully, have the city help make it more official.”

Until then, Campos will keep showing up, bringing joy, and proving that sometimes, all it takes is a little imagination, a few simple games, and a big heart to bring a community together.

For families looking to join the fun, Get Out and Play Days are currently held Sundays at 3 p.m. at various parks in Newman, weather permitting. Keep an eye on local community pages for updates, and come ready to play.
