As National 4H Week kicks off, the members of Westside 4H in Gustine are eager to join in the celebrations. This year, the club is participating in the Merced County 4H Window Display Contest, showcasing their dedication to the theme “Beyond Ready.” You can view their creative display at Lee’s Floral in Gustine throughout the week.

On Thursday, Oct. 10, the club will hold its monthly meeting at 5:30 p.m. at the OLM Parish Center 1, located at 407 Laurel Avenue. Open to all youth ages 9-18, the meeting offers an opportunity to learn about the many projects 4H members can participate in, including Swine, Sheep, Goats, Dairy Cattle, Beef Cattle, Horse, Poultry, Livestock Judging, Gardening, Sewing, Public Speaking, Leadership, and Baking.

Westside 4H is more than just a club for youth to develop agricultural and life skills; it is also deeply committed to giving back to the community. Throughout the year, members participate in a variety of community service projects, such as serving Thanksgiving dinner to residents at Green Acres Mobile Park, helping the City of Gustine collect donations for the 4th of July fireworks show, and cleaning up the streets of Gustine after the Motors on Main charity Car Show.

The largest community service event is set for December, where the club will host a countywide 4H dance. Admission to the dance requires the donation of a new toy, all of which will be given to the Gustine Lions Club for their annual toy and canned food drive. Last year, Westside 4H donated more than 200 toys, benefiting local children and families.

Additionally, the club’s Livestock Judging team recently competed at the Cow Palace Livestock Judging Competition on Oct. 3, with five out of their seven participants placing in the top ten.

For more information on joining 4H and getting involved in the community, visit the upcoming meeting on Oct. 10 or reach out to the club directly.
