The Gustine Old-Fashioned Christmas Downtown, a treasured community tradition, will hold special meaning this year as the Gustine Chamber of Commerce dedicates the annual Christmas tree lighting to the memory of Fred Schoppet, lovingly known as Westside’s Santa.

Fred Schoppet, who passed away earlier this year at the age of 68, was a cherished figure in the Westside community, bringing Christmas joy to countless families for over 40 years. Whether he was reading stories, posing for photos as Santa, or riding atop the firetruck in the lighted parade, Fred’s warmth and generosity left an indelible mark on everyone who met him.

This year, the Gustine Chamber of Commerce has invited Westside 4H to light the Christmas tree in Fred’s honor. Known for their dedication to the community, the 4H officers were selected as a fitting tribute to Fred’s enduring legacy of inspiring and uplifting youth.

“Fred always had a special place in his heart for the kids in town,” shared Vanessa Rogers, event coordinator for the Gustine Chamber of Commerce. “We knew Westside 4H would be the perfect group to light the tree in his honor. Fred loved seeing how involved the youth were in the community, and we wanted this moment to reflect the joy and inspiration he brought to all of us.”

Though Fred’s family is unable to attend this year’s event due to being out of the area, his presence will be felt in a permanent way. To honor his memory, the Chamber has purchased an 8-foot outdoor Santa statue that will stand proudly beside the Christmas tree each year.

“Fred was the kind of person who could light up an entire room with his presence,” said Judi Gandy, a longtime friend and Gustine Chamber of Commerce Vice President. “He didn’t just play Santa—he embodied everything Santa represents: kindness, love, and the magic of Christmas. He touched so many lives, and his memory will always be a part of Gustine.”

Fred Schoppet’s commitment to the community and his passion for spreading holiday cheer extended far beyond his role as Santa. His favorite part of the event was always seeing the smiles of children and families as they gathered to celebrate the season.

As the Westside 4H members lead this year’s tree lighting ceremony on Saturday, the community will come together to honor Fred’s legacy and the values he exemplified: generosity, love, and a deep commitment to bringing joy to others.

“This year’s ceremony is not just about lighting a tree—it’s about celebrating the life of someone who gave so much to this community,” Rogers added. “Fred’s memory will continue to inspire us to come together, to give back, and to cherish the magic of the holiday season.”

The Gustine Old-Fashioned Christmas Downtown will begin in the early evening with festivities including caroling, holiday treats, and the lighting of the tree in Fred’s honor.
