Newman Recreation Adult Co-ed Volleyball League

Registration for the 37th year of the Newman Recreation Adult Co-ed Volleyball League starts Aug. 28. League games will start Sept. 10 and 12 and be held on Tuesdays and/or Thursdays.

Each league lasts eight weeks.

Players must be 18 years or older and out of high school.

Costs are $5 per player per league and an additional $5 charge for players outside of the Newman Crows Landing Unified School District.

2024 Newman Fall Festival Volleyball Tournament

The 34th year of the Fall Festival Volleyball tournament will be held on Aug. 31 at Densmore Park.

Registration starts at 8:30 a.m. and competition starts at 9:30 a.m.

Teams of two to four players will compete in upper and lower divisions.

The entry fee is $10 per player. The first 200 to register will receive a commemorative shirt.

Gustine Museum

The Gustine Historical Society has a new exhibit opening at the Gustine Museum. The exhibit is Gustine’s POW from World War II.

Guests are invited to join the Society as they honor the Gustine veterans that were captured during WWII and the hardships they had to endure. The veterans are: Rudolph Bambauer, Donald Bloom Clarence Nightengale, Jimmy Borrelli, Wilbur Gomes and Frank Farr. The exhibit is ongoing.

The museum is located at 397 Fourth Street on Highway 33. It is open from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Thursdays and Sundays. Admission is free.

 

Gustine Historical Society

The Gustine Historical Society will hold their annual salad bar luncheon from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Oct. 23.

The cost is $15.

The luncheon will be at the Al Goman Center.

Take out will be available.

Newman Library

Lego day is set for 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Aug. 22.

A Nintendo Switch Party for those 8 to 13 years will be from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 26. The teen Nintendo Switch Party will be from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Aug. 27 and is for those 12 to 18 years old.

Tiny Tots will be from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Aug. 28 and is for those 5 years and under with a caregiver.

 

Gustine Library

The Gustine Library will host several reoccurring events over the month of August.

Tiny Tales Storytime is at 10:30 a.m. every Thursday.

Family Storytime is at 10:30 a.m. every Saturday.

Kid’s Craft Time is for children 6 to 12 years old and is at 3 p.m. on the first Thursday of the month.

Family Lego Fun Time is from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. every Saturday.

Adult coloring time is offered at 4 p.m. on the last Tuesday of the month.

The teen book club will be meeting the first Tuesday of each month at 4:30 p.m. This is for teens 13 to 19 and is a new offering from the library.

 

 

Newman Recreation Department

The Newman Recreation Department hosts dance therapy classes at the L.J. Newman Memorial Building every Wednesday from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m.

The martial arts class of Kajukenbo is taught every Tuesday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the L.J. Newman Memorial Building.

 

 

City of Gustine meetings

The Gustine Planning Commission is set to meet at 6 p.m. Aug. 28 in council chambers at 352 Fifth St.

 

City of Newman meetings

The Newman City Council will meet at 7 p.m. Aug. 27 in council chambers at 938 Fresno St.

The Newman Planning Commission is set to meet at 7 p.m. Aug. 15 in council chambers at 938 Fresno St.

 

Italian Catholic Federation

The Italian Catholic Federation will hold their celebration dinner on Aug. 25.
