Big rig driver killed in I-5 crash

A collision of a trailer-truck on Interstate 5 in Newman resulted in the death of the driver, the California Highway Patrol.

The collision happened at 8:27 p.m. on Friday on northbound I-5, north of State Route 140.

The name of the deceased has not been released. He was a 48-year-old from Manteca.

The man was driving a 2015 Freightliner tractor pulling a CIMC trailer. He was in the middle lane, when for an unknown reason he allowed the big rig to veer to the right and eventually enter the east shoulder, according to the CHP.

The Freightliner continued down a dirt embankment until it collided with a barbed wire fence.

The driver was not wearing a seat belt. He was pronounced deceased at the scene.

It is unknown at this time if drugs or alcohol contributed to the crash. The investigation is ongoing.
