On average, there are more than 20,000 drivers in California involved in a crash every year where inattention is a factor. A new effort will focus on reducing the incidence of distracted driving.

The Newman Police Department will be conducting traffic safety operations throughout the month of April focused on distracted driving.

“Distracted driving is a contributing factor in many traffic collisions,” Newman Police Sergeant Ashley Williams said. “It’s a dangerous behavior that places those who share our roadways in unnecessary danger.”

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, distracted driving is any activity that diverts attention away from driving, including, but not limited to, texting or talking on the phone while driving.

Funding for this program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
