The Newman Fire Department responded to 19 calls for service from Dec. 21 to Dec. 27. There were 17 calls for Emergency Medical Services, one potential structure fire call and one public assistance call.
At 2:41 a.m. on Dec. 25, the Newman Station was dispatched for a potential structure fire in the 1900 block of Pine Street. The reporting party found a bedroom filled with smoke. On arrival, the fire crew noted a single-story residential structure with occupants outside stating there was smoke in the back bedroom. On arrival of additional resources, the crews investigated the back bedroom for the source of the smoke. The smoke was isolated to a malfunctioning ceiling fan in the back bedroom of the residence. The crew removed the malfunctioning fan and secured the electrical wiring to the location. The incident was mitigated and the crews were dedicated to the scene for one hour. The estimated damage was $100 and no injuries were reported. The cause of the fire was determined to be a malfunctioning ceiling fan.
