Fire calls March 28 to April 4

Photo by Michael Mutoza A fire in a detached single-story garage on R Street on April 1 prompted a multi-agency response to keep the blaze from spreading to neighboring homes. The fire was determined to be from an accidental electrical fire.

The Newman Fire Station responded to 22 calls for service from March 28 to April 4. The calls included 10 for Emergency Medical Services, one public assist call, three vehicle collisions, two mutual aid calls, one false alarm call, two working structure fires, two smoke checks and one illegal burn.

At 8:55 p.m. on March 29, the Newman Station was dispatched for a vehicle accident on Yolo Street and N Street. On arrival, the fire crews found a single vehicle off the roadway on top of a fire hydrant. The occupant was self-extricated, and the hydrant was gushing water. The damages were minor, and no injuries were reported.

At 4:24 p.m. on March 30, the Newman Station was dispatched for a vehicle collision on Stuhr Road near Eastin Road. On arrival, the fire crews found two vehicles blocking the roadway. All occupants were out of the vehicles and suffered moderate injuries. The cause of the accident is under investigation by CHP. The damages were estimated at $16,000.

At 3:20 p.m. on April 1, the Newman Station was dispatched for a structure fire in the 1500 block of R Street. Merced County Fire, Patterson Fire, Woodland Avenue Fire, Turlock Rural Fire, Newman Police Department, and Stanislaus County Fire Investigation Unit provided mutual aid. On arrival, the fire crews found a detached single-story garage involved and worked swiftly to extinguish the fire. The cause of the fire was determined to be accidental electrical. The damages were estimated at $45,000. There were no injuries to report.
