Three horses had to be rescued from a Stevinson property after the Merced County Sheriff’s Animal Services Bureau found them in severe shape.

The animal services unit was called out to the Stevinson property off Highway 140 for a welfare check of the three horses.

“Unfortunately, they found two mares and one gelding in very poor condition,” the unit said on their Facebook page.

The investigation determined that the horses’ basic needs were not being met by the owner. As a result, the horses were taken and transported to the Merced County Animal Shelter, where they will receive the proper care and attention needed to recover.

Felony charges will be filed against the owner, according to animal services. The owner’s name has not been released.

“We are very proud of Officer Brown and Officer Pacheco for their efforts in this investigation and potentially saving the lives of three horses,” the unit said.
