A 44-year-old man believed to be inebriated stepped into the path of an oncoming vehicle on Highway 33 on Sunday and was killed, the California Highway Patrol.

The name of the deceased has not been released, pending next of kin notification.

The collision was reported at 4:38 a.m. Sunday on Highway 33, north of Ike Crow Road.

A 2020 Honda Civic driven by Alondra Contreras, 23, of Newman was traveling northbound on the highway. Just north of Ike Crow Road, the 44-year-old man stepped out onto the highway directly into the path of the Honda Civic.

“Mrs. Contreras was unable to take evasive actions and as a result a crash occurred,” CHP spokesman Officer Tom Olsen said.

The man sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene.

“It is believed the pedestrian was under the influence of alcohol at the time of this crash,” Olsen said.

Contreras was not injured in the collision.

Highway 33 was closed temporarily but the impact on traffic was minimal because of the time.
