Newman Police

The Newman Police Department received 69 calls for service and reported 101 officer-initiated calls for a total of 170 calls from Feb. 16 to Feb. 22.

There were 24 cases opened and eight arrests. The department issued 17 traffic citations, two criminal citations, seven parking citations and one animal citation. Five vehicles were towed.

DUI

A Newman man was arrested on Feb. 16 after he was seen by Newman Police officers driving recklessly in the area of Hills Ferry and Canal School roads.

The officers were performing a speed enforcement around 10 p.m. when they witnessed a driver doing donuts and burning out, according to the police department.

The officers made a traffic stop on the driver, identified as Francisco Maciasvalle, 43, of Newman. The officers noticed a strong odor of alcohol and performed a field sobriety test. Maciasvalle was arrested on suspicion of DUI.

DUI

A Morgan Hill man tried to evade arrest for a DUI by turning off his headlights and accelerating away from Newman Police officers as they attempted a traffic stop.

Around 11:30 p.m. on Feb. 18, officers noticed a pickup truck with only one headlight. The officers got behind the truck and were trying to conduct a traffic stop. 

At this point the driver, Christopher Mendez Mendoza, 20, of Morgan Hill, turned on the lights to black out the vehicle as it accelerates. 

The driver was reaching speeds of more than 80 miles per hour in the heavy rain with limited visibility. At one point Mendoza crossed over the line at Hills Ferry Road into oncoming traffic before getting back into his own lane. 

At Hills Ferry and River roads the driver lost control of the truck and it spun out and slid into a nearby field. The pursuing officers were able to take Mendoza into custody without further incident. He was arrested on suspicion of evading with wanton disregard for public safety.

Arrests

Francisco Maciasvalle, 43, of Newman was arrested on Feb. 16 for DUI.

Primitivo Gratton, 40, of Newman was arrested on Feb. 18 for a warrant.

Christopher Mendez Mendoza, 20, of Morgan Hill was arrested on Feb. 18 for evading a peace officer with wanton disregard for safety.

Victor Yepez, 36, of Modesto was arrested on Feb. 19 for driving on a license suspended for DUI.

Jose Mendoza, 44, of Newman was arrested on Feb. 20 for a warrant.

Jerymia Parker, 29, of Crows Landing was arrested on Feb. 22 for driving on a license suspended for DUI.

Arrests

Bruce Busch, 57, was arrested at 12:26 a.m. on Feb. 18 in the 1600 block of Via Italiano for threatening a crime with an intent to terrorize and battery on a person.
