Newman Police

The Newman Police Department received 60 calls for service and reported 82 officer-initiated calls for a total of 142 incidents from July 5 to July 11.

There were 24 cases opened and nine arrests. The department issued 11 traffic citations, four criminal citations, one municipal code violation, 13 parking citations and one animal citation. Three vehicles were towed.

Vandalism

The Newman Police Department took a report of vandalism on two vehicles parked in front of the Rolling Hills apartment complex in the 2100 block of Prince Road. The incident was reported on July 10. One vehicle had all four tires slashed and the other had three tires slashed. 

Arrests

Blake Saenz, 36, of Newman was arrested on July 6 for battery on a person.

Jesus Gamez, 35, of Santa Maria was arrested on July 6 for DUI, DUI oof .08 or more and driving on a suspended license.

Robert Perry, 47, of Tracy was arrested on July 9 for driving on a license suspended for DUI, possession of a controlled substance and a warrant.

Anthony Gonzalez, 25, of Newman was arrested on July 10 for being an unlicensed driver and a warrant.

Ralph Vasquez, 44, of Newman was arrested for driving on a license suspended for DUI, false tabs, and warrants.

Jose Mendoza, 45, of Newman was arrested on July 10 for possession of a controlled substance.

Nathan Powell, 40, of Newman was arrested on July 11 for being a public nuisance and possession of a shopping cart.

Gustine Police

At 9:40 p.m. on July 6, Officer Hollis was dispatched to the 700 block of South Avenue regarding a customer in the store, appearing to be extremely intoxicated and operating a motor vehicle. The suspect, Hector Vargas, was driving a tan Chevrolet Silverado and Officer Hollis located the vehicle at the 1100 block of Meredith Avenue. Officer Hollis made a stop of the vehicle and determined the driver was under the influence. With the assistance of Sgt. Gilstrap, officers attempted to take the suspect into custody, however he was combative and was tased. The suspect was taken into custody and booked at the Merced County Jail.

At 4:15 p.m. on July 7, Officer Alvarez observed the driver of a gray Nissan Versa commit a traffic violation in his presence in the area of Jensen Road. Officer Alvarez made a stop of the vehicle and made contact with the driver. During the investigation, Officer Alvarez confirmed that the driver was driving on a suspended license. The driver was also found to have an active out of county warrant. Officer Alvarez placed the driver under arrest and later released the driver via citation.

At 6:05 p.m. on July 8, Officer Trujillo was in the area of the 300 block of Wallis Avenue when he located a suspect with a felony warrant. Officer Trujillo placed the suspect, identified as Rey Andrade, under arrest and later booked the suspect at the county jail.

 At 9:44 p.m. on July 9, Officer Alvarez observed the driver of a Honda Civic commit a traffic violation in his presence in the area of South Avenue. Officer Alvarez made a stop of the vehicle and made contact with the driver. The driver was determined to be driving under the influence and Officer Alvarez placed the driver under arrest. The driver was eventually released via citation.

 At 9:35 p.m. on July 10, Sgt. Gilstrap observed the driver of a white Ford Ranger commit a traffic violation in his presence in the area of Jensen Road. Sgt. Gilstrap made a stop of the vehicle and made contact with the driver. During the investigation, the driver was determined in having an out of county warrant. Sgt. Gilstrap placed the driver under arrest and later released the driver via citation.

Arrests

Hector Vargas, 43, was arrested at 9:49 p.m. July 6 in the 1200 block of Meredith Avenue for obstruction, DUI and DUI of .08 or more.

Rey Andrade, 61, was arrested at 6:19 p.m. on July 8 in the 300 block of Wallis Avenue for a warrant.

Diego Rubio Alvarez, 37, was arrested at 9:26 p.m. on July 11 in the 600 block of Laurel Avenue for possession of a controlled substance, DUI and DUI of .08 or more.
