The Westside area saw two collisions last week that both resulted in fatalities, the California Highway Patrol reported.
The first collision happened just after 3 a.m. March 5 on northbound Interstate 5, south of Henry Miller Avenue.
The deceased was identified as Ricardo Alonso, 26, of Santa Maria.
A 2021 Kenworth big rig driven by Gurjant Singh, 28, of Elk Grove, was northbound on Interstate 5 in the middle lane nearing Henry Miller Avenue.
For an unknown reason, Singh allowed the big rig to veer onto the right shoulder where it struck the rear trailer of a parked 2012 Kenworth big rig, according to the CHP.
Alonso was outside the big rig at the time of the collision. The impact caused the big rig and trailer to move several feet, striking Alonso and causing fatal injuries.
Singh had minor injuries and was transported to a Modesto hospital for treatment.
The collision is under investigation and it has not yet been determined if drugs or alcohol were involved.
The second collision happened at 4:55 a.m. on March 7 on Highway 33, north of McCracken Road.
The deceased, identified as Byron Gonzalez, 50, was walking southbound on Highway 33 when he was struck by a 2004 Nissan pickup truck that was also headed southbound on Highway 33.
The CHP said the right front of the Nissan struck Gonzalez, causing him to land within the southbound traffic lane. He sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The driver of the Nissan, Richard Berry, 58, of Stockton was not injured.
Drugs and alcohol were not considered factors in the collision, according to the CHP.
Highway 33 was temporarily closed down from McCracken Road to Welty Road during the investigation.
