A Newman man is facing a litany of criminal charges, including attempted homicide after stabbing a woman with a screwdriver, the Newman Police Department reported.
The attack also prompted a nearly one-hour long standoff and a lockdown at two Newman schools.
The incident began at 10:53 a.m. on March 26 at a home in the 700 block of Hardin Road. The police department was dispatched for a report of a physical altercation among family members.
The suspect, later identified as 20-year-old Javier Diaz, Jr. of Newman, attacked a44-year-old female relative first by trying to suffocate her and then stabbing her with a screwdriver multiple times, including defensive wounds to her arms, said Newman Police Sgt. Jose Gomez.
At one point in the attack, Diaz left to get something and the victim was able to run to the neighbor’s house and call for help. She was transported by ambulance to an area hospital for treatment of her injuries.
The suspect was trying to flee the area by climbing over an 8-foot fence but found his attempt thwarted by law enforcement. However, he refused to come down and it prompted a standoff with law enforcement that lasted 55 minutes, Gomez said.
The Gustine Police Department and the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office both provided support in establishing a perimeter around the area. The standoff caused a precautionary lockdown at Orestimba High School and Hunt Elementary.
The less-lethal shotgun and K9 Milo were both used to get Diaz to comply. He eventually surrendered and was taken into custody.
Diaz was transported to the Stanislaus County Public Safety Center where he was booked for the charges of attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon likely to cause great bodily harm, and obstruction.
