Taskforce Chair Susan Markarian emphasized the importance of these efforts, stating, “As AI rapidly evolves and transforms industries, it is imperative that California’s education system stay ahead of the curve to maximize the benefits of AI while safeguarding the welfare of the state’s students.”

 

A report by the Center for Digital Thriving at Harvard’s Graduate School of Education reveals that students are increasingly utilizing AI tools for academic purposes. Many have developed habits and opinions about AI’s role in learning, expressing both enthusiasm and concern. One student noted, “The world is changing,” highlighting the transformative potential of AI in education.

 

However, students also caution against overreliance on AI, emphasizing the need for critical thinking and ethical considerations. They advocate for clear guidelines and education on responsible AI use to ensure it serves as a beneficial supplement rather than a replacement for traditional learning methods.

 

Parents exhibit a mix of optimism and concern regarding AI in education. A survey conducted by the Walton Family Foundation in May 2024 found that over 80% of parents believe AI has had a positive impact on education. They recognize AI’s potential to personalize learning and enhance educational outcomes.

 

Despite this optimism, parents express apprehension about data privacy and the ethical implications of AI use. They emphasize the importance of transparency and advocate for responsible AI policies that protect student information and promote equitable access to technological resources.

As AI continues to permeate the educational landscape, initiatives like CSBA’s AI Taskforce play a crucial role in guiding its integration.
