Our Lady of Miracles (OLM) was buzzing with excitement during this year’s Catholic Schools Week, a nationwide celebration that brings together students, staff, and the community to honor various aspects of their mission.

The week kicked off with a poignant Blue Mass on the first Sunday, a longstanding tradition at OLM where the community comes together to honor first responders and military personnel. The turnout was impressive, showcasing the strong connection between OLM and local heroes. The fire department and police department actively engage with students, fostering a sense of appreciation and respect.

Throughout the week, OLM students are engaged in a myriad of activities that celebrate different facets of their community. A flag-raising ceremony with members of the local VFW and American Legion Post set a patriotic tone. The police department’s visit, complete with reading sessions for younger students and tours of police vehicles, adds an interactive and educational element.

The festivities continue with a visit from the high school band, treating students to an impromptu concert on the blacktop—a favorite among the kids. Junior high students embark on various excursions, from a mock city council meeting at City Hall to visits to the museum, library, and local businesses, expressing gratitude for the community’s support.

One remarkable service project involves students collecting essential items for the Gustine Unified School District resource room. This initiative, spanning first through fifth-grade students, reflects OLM’s commitment to giving back to the broader community.

Principal Julie Barcelos expressed her deep connection to these events, highlighting the genuine involvement of OLM students in planning and executing community service projects. The week’s activities not only align with OLM’s mission but also emphasize the importance of serving others, a value instilled in students from preschool to high school.

“As the principal, being part of Our Lady of Miracles for four years, and previously as a parent, volunteer, and teacher, I’ve witnessed the heartfelt commitment of our students. Every year, it touches my heart to see them initiate community service projects, generating ideas and adding to the collections. From preschoolers to high school sophomores like my daughter, these are their ideas, and they truly understand the meaning of giving back. It’s inspiring to see them actively contributing to our mission of service. Catholic Schools Week showcases the goodness that permeates our school, and I’m proud to be a part of this community,” said Barcelos.

The week was filled with special moments, including a book fair featuring Christian faith-based books from Sky Tree Books, a school-wide pizza party, a visit from the superintendent, and a family day with a morning mass, photo booth, music, and, of course, 40 dozen donuts from a local shop.

OLM wrapped up Catholic Schools Week with a second-quarter award ceremony. Barcelos shared her pride in witnessing the students’ understanding of the importance of giving back, making Catholic Schools Week a cherished and meaningful tradition at OLM.
