As the new school year gets underway, Gustine High School is seeing a shift in student interests when it comes to sports. While the football team may have a smaller roster this year, other sports are thriving, reflecting the diverse interests and commitments of today’s students.
Principal Adam Cano shared his insights into the current state of the football program and why the numbers may be lower this season. "Football at Gustine High School is more than just a fall sport. It’s a commitment that starts in April and continues all the way through November," Cano explained. "The coaching staff has set high expectations for consistency and preparation, and while not all students have been able to meet those demands, the program remains strong for those who do."
The lower turnout isn’t necessarily a cause for concern, according to Cano, but rather an indication of the evolving priorities among students. "We’ve seen a lot of interest in other sports like soccer, basketball, and volleyball, which are all doing great," he said. "There’s also been a big response to flag football and cheerleading. It’s clear that our students are finding their passion in a variety of activities, and that’s something to celebrate."
One of the key factors affecting football participation is the time commitment required. "Football is a long season, starting in the spring and going through to the fall," Cano noted. "For many students, balancing sports with other responsibilities, like jobs or family commitments, can be challenging. We’re seeing that students are making choices that best fit their schedules and interests, and that’s okay."
Cano emphasized that the coaching staff is fully supportive of the students who are committed to the football program. "Our coaches have been consistent in their approach, and they’ve set a standard that upholds safety and readiness. Even with fewer players, the team is focused and prepared to compete," he said.
While the numbers for football may be down, the overall spirit of athletics at Gustine High School remains vibrant. "We’re seeing growth in other areas, and that’s a positive sign," Cano added. "Every student has different interests, and it’s great to see them pursuing what they’re passionate about."
Looking ahead, Cano is optimistic about the future of Gustine High School sports. "Whether it’s on the football field or the basketball court, our students are showing up and giving their best. That’s what matters most," he said. "We’re here to support them in whatever they choose to do, and we’re proud of the commitment they’re showing across all our sports programs."
As the season progresses, the focus will be on ensuring that every student-athlete, regardless of the sport they choose, has a fulfilling and positive experience. With strong leadership and a commitment to excellence, Gustine High School is ready to embrace the new school year with enthusiasm and support for all its student-athletes.
