NCLUSD take California Healthy Kids Survey

Students across the Newman Crows Landing Unified School District participated in the California Healthy Kids Survey (CHKS) on Monday. This important survey, designed for students in grades five, seven, nine, and eleven, offers a unique opportunity for schools and communities to gain critical insights into student wellness, school climate, and youth resiliency.

The CHKS, an anonymous and confidential survey, provides data that helps schools address key areas such as school safety, connectedness, academic performance, and the overall well-being of students. The survey also enables districts to make data-driven decisions to enhance school climate and learning environments, fostering a healthier, more supportive space for students to thrive.

To ensure inclusivity and a comprehensive approach, the CHKS is accompanied by the California School Staff Survey (CSSS) for educators and the California School Parent Survey (CSPS) for parents. Together, these surveys form the California School Climate, Health, and Learning Survey (CalSCHLS) System, which has been recognized by the U.S. Department of Education as a model program. Parents can access their version of the survey through this link https://www.nclusd.org/article/2128158.

In addition to collecting data on school climate, protective factors, and school violence, the CHKS provides insights into student health risks, including drug and alcohol use, mental health, and physical well-being. This data is invaluable for supporting various statewide and local programs, including after-school initiatives, public health campaigns, and youth development projects.

Students in fifth grade will participate with active parental consent, requiring written permission from parents or guardians. For students in grades seven through twelve, participation requires passive consent, allowing parents to opt their children out if desired.

The CHKS is a crucial step in building a stronger, safer, and more connected school community. With over 1.3 million students across California participating in the survey between 2021 and 2023, NCLUSD joins a statewide effort to prioritize the health, safety, and success of its students.

As the district prepares for the survey, the insights gained will shape the future of education and youth development, ensuring that every student has the support they need to succeed.
