The Gustine Elementary School cafeteria was glowing with excitement as young writers took center stage for the 2024 Gustine Elementary School Speech Contest. Six finalists, 4th and 5th graders, earned their spot to continue on to the Merced County of Education contest on April 8 and 9.

“Overall, they did very well,” mentioned second grade teacher Melanie Mello. “It was pretty close for a couple of them. We felt ones that made it were prepared effectively.”

Their hard work paid off. Fourth grade winners were Jose Anajel, Alene Anderson, Yaretzi Sandoval. Fifth grade winners were Noah Bueno, Itzae Salicido, and Kaiden Pena. These students will prepare for the main event on April 8 and 9. The six finalists will represent Gustine Elementary at the Merced County Office of Education contest. These young writers will get a chance to present their skills against peers from across the county.

Although certificates were handed out at the school contest, something a little more memorable is yet to come. The finalists will be issued plaques to commemorate their hard work and dedication. It’s not just a plaque, but it’s a memorabilia of the countless hours spent perfecting speeches and writing.

“The parents enjoyed it and were very supportive. It’s exciting for them to go see their child participate at the county level,” said Mello.

Parents played a crucial role in the success of the up-and-coming writers. Their support was felt through the cafeteria, filling the air with cheers and applause. And it is sure to carry over to the MCOE event.

The Gustine Elementary School Speech Contest isn’t just about words. It’s about nurturing a love for expression and honing the skills that will stay with these students in the years to come.

Their next stop is the MCOE speech contest on April 8 and 9. There is limited capacity for the event. If you would like to learn more information on how to attend, call MCOE at (209)381-6600.
