“Things that made him an effective dad, also made him an effective educator, and an outstanding coach,” said Aaron McWilliams.
A historical event took place for Orestimba High School on Saturday. The purple ribbon was cut, officially dedicating the Orestimba High School as Kerry McWilliams Memorial Gymnasium. Alumni, community members, and family of coach Kerry “Mac” McWilliams were all in attendance to commemorate the special event.
There were special introductions while entering the gym. In the main lobby, a ball was placed on a table with previous McWilliams team photos. The ball was signed by alumni and attendees, with notes of passage in memory of coach Mac.
Superintendent Justin Pruett would open the ceremony with kind words after being introduced by Mrs. Mac. Pruett, his first significant event as the NCLUSD superintendent, would praise Kerry McWilliams personality traits that stick with him.
“One of the things I remember the most about Mr. Mac, whoever he was around, you were important to him, and made you feel that way,” said Pruett.
It was a special moment as Aaron McWilliams, son of Kerry McWilliams, spoke at the podium. The impact his father had on his character, outlook of life, were a tremendous resource of motivation to Aaron.
“It’s hard when he’s got 40-plus years of resemblance in my life” mentioned Aaron McWilliams. “My dad (Kerry McWilliams) was my favorite, he led by example, and didn’t take himself too seriously.”
Mick Tate would give a big team break to the crowd. After speaking, reaching his hand out to the crowd, asking attendees to give a final break for coach Mac. A roar could be heard throughout resonating echoes as Tate would count “One, two, three, ‘Coach Mac!’.”
There were letters read on behalf of Dean Harris and the Western Athletic Conference.
“While Kerry was competitive and enjoyed winning. He considered life lessons learned and lasting memories forged along the way, to be the far most valuable aspects of history,” read Susan Matton on behalf of Dean Harris.
Orestimba High School Athletic Director, John Labno, would go on to read a letter from the Western Athletic Conference. Condemning Mr. Mac for his success as a coach, leader, educator, and participation in the CIF SJS conference.
Then the most anticipated moment arrived. Kasey McWilliams, Justin Pruett, Kathy McWilliams, Aaron McWilliams, Don Cabral, stood out in front of the gym, to cut the purple ribbon. Forever dedicated to the Kerry McWilliams Memorial Gymnasium.
Some food and socializing ended the event. Linguiça sandwiches, cookies and drinks were provided for attendees. Alumni, staff, and McWilliams family socialized with everyone. Coach Mac will forever be remembered for his 29-years of dedication to Orestimba High School. As the community approaches the 2-years since his passing on April 8, 2022, an important moment for Orestimba High sports and for the many years to come.
