Romero Elementary was one of the many schools locally and nationally that participated last week in Read Across America in celebration of Dr. Seuss’ birthday.

Read Across America Week is celebrated from March 2 to 6 — it begins on the birthday of children’s author, Dr. Seuss. The entire month of March, in fact, is dedicated to reading. The National Education Association launched Read Across America in 1998 as a year-round program to celebrate reading. Given Dr. Seuss’ impact on the reading world, his birthday (March 2) was declared Read Across America Day. This also commences Read Across America Week and Read Across America Month.

Romero had many activities throughout the week to encourage students to read, including guest speakers to read to the students throughout the week. Some of the guest speakers were: Loretta Rose (GUSD Board Member), SRO Officer Fuentes, Santa Nella Fire Department, Lisa Filippini (Assistant Superintendent), Donna Torres, and Mr. Freitas (Principal).

Romero held a book cover contest where students recreated covers of their favorite books. The school also purchased books to distribute to all students to promote reading at home.

Miss Beevers held a scavenger hunt at recess time where students had to look for Dr. Seuss characters and were given prizes if they won.

In addition to the Read Across America activities, Romero held its annual career fair on March 8. The school had 15 guest speakers come present their careers to the students. Some of the guest speakers included: Empresario’s Barber Shop, Merced County Sheriff’s Department, GPD, Santa Nella Fire Department, Oakland Zoologist, Nail & Beauty Technicians, Agriculture Business, and more.

“Our students had an amazing time at the career fair and were introduced to many careers,” said Romero School Counselor and SST Coordinator Jessica Moua.
