The City of Gustine has announced an opportunity for a dedicated individual to join its Public Safety department in a role to address the rising number of stray cats across town, among others.

This non-sworn position, which reports to the Chief of Police or a designated supervisor, will involve a variety of public safety duties, including crime prevention, animal control, municipal ordinance enforcement, and evidence processing.

With an annual salary ranging from $45,244 to $57,744, this position offers competitive pay and a comprehensive benefits package, including CalPERS retirement. The successful applicant will be responsible for: Crime prevention activities; Enforcement of municipal ordinances; Animal control duties, including addressing the town’s growing stray cat population; Evidence processing and management; and Administrative support when required.

Residents of Gustine have voiced their concerns about the ongoing stray cat problem, expressing hopes that the new hire will continue the work of the previous officer in making more positive difference.

Paul Flores, 58, a long-time resident of Gustine, shared, “We’ve seen the number of stray cats around our neighborhood go up in the last few years. I’m really hoping whoever steps into this role will be proactive in helping to get this under control. It's affecting our community's cleanliness and our property. They also have to not be afraid of telling homeowners they need to get their properties in order. The current one’s been doing a good job on making sure people get their junk of their lawns but we need more work on people leaving their furniture or trash out.”

Elena Martinez, 34, a fast food worker, echoed this sentiment. “We love Gustine, but the current state of some buildings downtown needs to be addressed. Some buildings are a growing problem with bats hiding in open corners and facades needing work done. I hope the new hire will work closely with building owners to help meet city codes on Main Street.”

Meanwhile, Karen Nichols, 44, a retired teacher and grandmother, expressed her desire for a community-focused candidate. “I want someone in this role who cares about Gustine’s future, not just from a safety standpoint, but also in maintaining the well-being of animals and public spaces. Stray cats are a concern, but I think with the right person, we can find a balance between helping them and ensuring our streets are safe and clean.”

Candidates must meet the following qualifications to be considered: High school diploma or GED equivalent; Experience handling domestic and/or farm animals; Record-keeping and administrative experience; and a valid Class C California driver’s license
Those interested in applying are encouraged to submit a cover letter, resume, and completed application to City Hall by 2 p.m. Sept. 27. The most qualified candidates will be invited to participate in the interview process.
