Bicycle and pedestrian safety efforts planned for September
BICYCLING
Anyone can improve their cycling abilities with a little practice.

The Newman Police Department will conduct traffic safety operations throughout the month of September focused on all aspects of bicycle and pedestrian safety.

Some of the focus will be on the most dangerous driving behaviors like texting and DUI that place pedestrians and bicyclists at risk.

Other violations include, but are not limited to, failing to yield the right of way to bicyclists and pedestrians, failing to stop for stop signs, unsafe speeds, and failing to signal.

As a reminder, pedestrians and bicyclists also have a responsibility to obey the rules of the roadway and are subject to citations.

“Motorists, bicyclists, and pedestrians all have rights to the roadways,” Newman Police Department Sergeant Ashley Williams said. “These individuals also have the responsibility to obey applicable traffic laws to ensure everyone’s safety.”

The Newman Police Department encourages motorists, pedestrians, and bicyclists to take the following precautions to help reduce the risk of collisions and injuries:

-Pedestrians and bicyclists should be predictable. Assume motorists will not see you and/or yield the right of way.

-Pedestrians and bicyclists should be visible. Wear brightly colored clothing to enhance visibility.

-Bicyclists should obey traffic laws, use hand signals, use lights at night (front white light and rear red reflector), and wear a helmet.

-Motorists should drive defensively, assume pedestrians and bicyclists actions will be unpredictable.

-Motorists should avoid distracted driving, obey traffic control devices and speed limits.
