The Gustine varsity baseball team continues to make sweeping victories a habit as they clinched a 2-0 series win against the Denair Coyotes last week, with a 6-3 score on Wednesday’s home game and sealing the deal with a 6-2 win on Friday at Denair.

There’s a formula that has been working for the Reds. In Wednesday’s matchup, the Reds showed early persistence, scoring three runs in the first inning and maintaining their lead throughout the game. Denair tried to rally with runs in the fifth and sixth innings but fell short against Gustine’s solid defense and pitching.

Head coach Craig Beevers praised the team’s performance, highlighting Jake Campbell’s outstanding pitching on Wednesday.

“Any day you get a win, it’s a good day regardless of what the score is,” said Beevers. “Jake threw a hell of a game. Anytime that your guy can go the full length and innings, and you’re not wasting pitchers, that’s also a small victory in itself.”

Despite distracting politics between Denair and the umpires, Beevers expanded on the importance of staying focused and not letting external factors affect the game.

“There’s always some adversity that sets in between two teams and the umpires, but you can’t let that affect you. You just got to play your game,” said Beevers.

Pitcher Jake Campbell (1) had some big shoes to fill. DJ Segura’s (10) performance last week was going to be hard to match. Campbell commented on Denair’s persistence to comeback late in the ballgame.

“For a second I thought, but after, in like the sixth inning, I got all those guys out and it was six to three. After that, I knew we (Reds) got this. We just have to make the plays in the last inning and our defense did. So, we came up with the win,” said Campbell.

This week, the Reds are preparing for their upcoming series against SAL League opponent, Le Grand. With their confidence high and their performance on point, Gustine aims to carry their winning momentum into the next week’s games.

The Gustine Reds will match against Le Grand, at home, at 4 p.m. on Monday. Reds hit the road for the rematch, at Le Grand, beginning at 4 p.m. Wednesday.
