The Gustine Reds junior varsity boys’ basketball, sporting a 2-6 record, faced a tough test against the Denair Coyotes (6-2) in a crucial game late in the season.  Despite having bested the Coyotes in their previous encounter, the Reds couldn't replicate their earlier success, ultimately falling 40-21.

The game started competitively. Gustine's #30 Justin Lopes secured a rebound and scored the first points of the game, giving the Reds an early lead. However, Denair's tenacious defense quickly asserted itself, putting significant pressure on the Reds throughout the first quarter.

Despite the defensive intensity, Gustine's #11 Emilio Caballero managed to contribute offensively, scoring to tie the game.  Denair responded by driving to the basket and converting the shot, giving the Coyotes a 7-4 advantage. Denair was fouled late in the quarter and made one free throw, extending Denair's lead to 12-5. With just seconds remaining, Gustine’s #3 Alex Palomino hit a crucial shot from the corner, closing the gap slightly to 12-7 at the end of the first quarter.

Early in the second quarter, Gustine's #2 Jayce Caetano scored, bringing the Reds closer at 12-9.  The battle for rebounds intensified as both teams fought for possession. Denair was fouled again and made one of two free throws, increasing Denair’s lead to 18-10.  Just before halftime, #11 Emilio Caballero scored again for Gustine, but Denair maintained a solid lead of 22-12 going into the break.

The second half saw a shift in momentum, with the Reds struggling to maintain their earlier intensity.  Denair capitalized on this, extending their lead to 27-12.  Gustine’s #55 Deimian Cardona entered the game and provided a spark with several impressive blocks, injecting some energy into the Reds' defense.  #30 Justin Lopes was fouled and calmly sank both free throws, making the score 29-14.  A technical foul on Denair's #00 gave Gustine's #3 Alex Palomino two free throw attempts, but he was unable to convert. The third quarter concluded with Denair comfortably ahead, 29-14.

In the fourth quarter, Gustine made a push to close the deficit.  Gustine's Palomino was fouled and made one free throw, making it 31-15.  Reds #22 Dylan Parker was also fouled and converted one of their free throw attempts, narrowing the gap slightly to 31-16.  Palomino was fouled again and this time made both free throws, bringing the score to 31-18.

With under four minutes left, Denair was fouled and made one free throw, making it 38-19.  #2 Jayce Caetano then scored for Gustine, assisted by #34 Jason Carona, bringing the score to 38-21 with just over two minutes remaining.

Despite a determined effort in the final minutes, the Reds couldn't overcome the Coyotes' strong performance. Denair secured the victory with a final score of 40-21.  The Coyotes' defensive pressure and consistent scoring proved to be the deciding factors in the game. While Gustine showed flashes of potential, they were ultimately unable to sustain the momentum needed to secure a win.
