The Gustine varsity boys’ soccer team faced a tough challenge in their final home game of the season, a rematch against Denair.  Earlier in the season, Gustine fell 2-0 to Denair on the road, and tonight they hoped to reverse the outcome as they fight for a playoff spot.  Denair, meanwhile, was looking to solidify their hold on second place in the league.

Gustine started the game with possession, and the first half proved to be a tightly contested defensive battle.  Both teams struggled to break through, resulting in a scoreless tie at halftime.  For Gustine, #10 Eric Mora, #18 Jose Gonzales, and #27 Noah Mendoza were instrumental in pushing the attack, while Denair's #10 Andrew Mapes, #24 Nico Zavala, and #8 Goliath Padilla led their team's offensive efforts.

The second half began with Denair possessing the ball.  At the 31:52 mark, Denair's #24 Nico Zavala received a yellow card for a push.  With 21 minutes remaining, Denair's #8 Goliath Padilla fired a powerful penalty kick into the net, giving Denair a 1-0 lead.  Just five minutes later, at the 16-minute mark, a yellow card was issued to Denair's number #11 Maddox Silva after a foul on Gustine's Eric Mora, whose subsequent shot on goal went wide.  Denair then extended their lead when #14 Fernando Gonzalez scored off a corner kick, making it 2-0.

The final score was 2-0 with Denair taking the win.
