The Gustine softball team were able to cage the Delhi Hawks last week, earning a commanding 16-5 victory, but felt the bite of the Le Grand Bulldogs on Friday, losing 16-0.
After low-scoring totals in their previous three contests, Gustine brought some dynamite into their match. They blew past the Delhi Hawks 16-5 on Wednesday. The win was a breath of fresh air for the Reds as it put an end to their five-game losing streak.
Anahi Alvarez made a splash no matter where she played. She struck out nine batters over five innings while giving up four earned runs off four hits. That's the most strikeouts she has posted since back in April of 2024. She was also stellar in the batter's box, going 3-for-4 with one home run, two runs, and one stolen base.
In other pitching news, Josie Nunes looked comfortable as she tossed one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits.
Back at the plate, Shandel Aguilera was incredible, going a perfect 3-for-3 with one home run, three RBI, and two runs. Xel-Ha Pantoja was another key player, scoring two runs and stealing a base while going 2-for-4.
Gustine kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 15 hits. They are 3-1 when they post 11 or more hits.
Gustine's victory was their first in the league, bumping their league record up to 1-2 and their overall record up to 3-6. As for Delhi, their defeat was their fifth straight at home dating back to last season, which dropped their record down to 1-7.
After a superior outing on the field, the Reds came back down to Earth on Friday, falling 16-0 to Le Grand. The defeat continues a trend for the Reds in their meetings with the Bulldogs: they've now lost nine in a row.
Gustine's loss dropped their record down to 3-7. As for Le Grand, they are on a roll lately: they've won six of their last eight contests. That's provided a massive bump to their 6-5 record this season.
Gustine will challenge rival Stone Ridge Christian at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday.
