Gustine High School’s boys' volleyball team has yet to secure a win.
This follows a two-game slate last week where Waterford and Delhi High School swept Gustine.
First-year head coach Fabian Andam said this is what it comes down to when handling a new roster, adding that 10 out of the 13 players on the roster are new.
Despite that, Andam’s biggest takeaway was that the team was more communicative in Wednesday’s match than in any other match this season.
“We were communicating more, this was probably one of the best games we’ve had even though,” Andam said. “We’re a very young team, we make a lot of mistakes but hopefully, this will help us get better.”
Gustine jumped out to an early 7-1 lead in the opening set, which prompted Delhi to call a timeout, That timeout may have provided a spark for Delhi as they responded with a 7-3 scoring run which caused Gustine to call a timeout. However, Delhi’s run helped them find their rhythm offensively as they later took an 11-10 lead and won the set, 25-21.
Following the first set, it went downhill for Gustine as they would not find their offensive rhythm from early on in the match.
Delhi jumped to an early 15-5 start in the second set and did not look back. They took advantage of several defensive miscues from Gustine to win the set, 25-11. The small crowd sitting in the bleachers got louder through each point Delhi scored.
From players not making timely stops to Delhi getting stops, Gustine could not find anything going offensively.
While Gustine made an effort to stay within the match as they trailed 14-10 halfway through the third set, it was not enough as Delhi went on to win the set, 25-17, giving them a 3-0 win.
24 hours before Wednesday’s match, Waterford swept Gustine, 3-0. Through all three sets, Waterford won 25-12, 25-16 and 25-12.
Gustine will have more than a week to rest and prepare before they travel to Stone Ridge Christian High School on April 1st. The match will begin at 6 p.m.
