On Oct. 10, the Gustine girls’ flag football team traveled to Mariposa to face the Grizzlies for the final time this season.

The Grizzles have been a powerhouse this season with a record of 12-10 overall and 6-1 in league. In the matchup with Gustine, the Grizzles showed their teeth, posting a 42-18 victory.

The game started out strong with both teams competing hard, Gustine never gave up and always had a positive attitude throughout the whole game. The game saw several of the girls getting into the endzone for the first time this season.

Nayeli Nieto had her first touchdown of the season, catching a pass for 15 yards. It also marked the Reds’ first touchdown of the game.

Adding a 12-yard touchdown for the Reds was Janney Loera for her first of the season.

Lastly, Bethany Guinn ran in the ball herself for a 15-yard touchdown. Ashley Mendoza assisted with a 2-point conversion.

Guinn had 17 and Mendoza had 15 flag pulls, both new records for them.

“I’m proud that the girls kept fighting throughout the whole game, they kept cheering each other on and never gave up on wanting to play,” said Coach Megan Azevedo.

The last home game is at 6 p.m. on Oct. 24 against Riverbank at Gustine High.

Gustine is 2-9 overall and 2-3 in league.

“Come out to support our seniors for senior night and our last game of the season,” Azevedo said.
