sports

The Gustine High School girls' basketball team hosted their first league game against Mariposa County High School on Jan. 3, falling 76-21 to the Grizzlies.

The Reds went in with a 1-7 record, while the Mariposa Grizzlies were 6-6 overall.

The first quarter started off slow for the Reds until #30 Brooklyn Jackson made her second free-throw to put them up on the board, scoring again after that. #5 Gwendolyn Barcelos added in two layups to make the first-half score 26-7 in Mariposa’s favor.

The Reds had tough second and third quarters as they were only able to put up six points each quarter, and adding in two points to finish the fourth quarter. Meanwhile, the Grizzlies were in double digits each quarter, sending Mariposa home with a win, 76-21.

Gustine was not able to break out of their rough patch on Tuesday as the team picked up their fifth straight defeat. They were a single point away from ending the streak, but they lost a 40-39 heartbreaker at the hands of the Waterford Wildcats. The result was an unpleasant reminder to the Reds of the 50-32 loss they experienced in the pair's previous head-to-head fixture back in February of 2024.

Despite the loss, Gustine still got an impressive performance from Shandel Aguilera, who dropped a triple-double on 21 points, 11 boards, and 11 steals. The dominant performance also gave Aguilera a new career-high in assists (seven). GWendolyn Barcelos was another key player, going 8 for 19 on her way to 16 points.

Even though they lost, Gustine was working as a unit and finished the game with 13 assists. That's the most assists they've managed all season.

Gustine's defeat dropped their record down to 1-10. As for Waterford, the victory made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 5-7.

Gustine played in conference for the first time on Thursday and they got just the result they we're looking for. They were the clear victor by a 44-18 margin over the Delhi Hawks. For those keeping track at home, that's the biggest win the Reds have posted since February 6, 2024.

Gustine's victory ended a four-game drought on the road and puts them at 2-10. As for Delhi, they dropped their record down to 0-12 with the defeat, which was their 14th straight at home dating back to last season.

The Reds are coming back home on Jan. 23 to face Le Grand at 7 p.m.
